This tool gives the ideal linear dilution ratio used in standard bar and production practice — real water/ethanol mixing is very slightly non-linear, so treat the result as a precise starting point and taste before finishing a batch. It is not a legal or regulatory reference for labelling stated ABV.

Ice dilution isn't optional

Every stirred or shaken drink is diluted by design — the water from melting ice is part of the recipe, not a mistake. A drink that tastes "right" straight from the shaker will usually taste thin and cold at first sip, then balanced a minute later as it opens up. The pour-style buttons above build that expected melt into your target ABV instead of leaving you to guess it.

Proof vs. ABV

US proof is simply double the ABV — 40% ABV is 80 proof, 57.5% is 115 proof. Every result here shows both, since bottle labels and bartenders switch between the two constantly, especially with American whiskey.

Batching for a bottle count

Hitting an exact target volume is useful for a recipe card, but bottling is easier in round numbers. When your batch volume lands close to a clean multiple of a standard bottle size, batch mode will suggest rounding to it — up or down, whichever is closer — so you're not left with an awkward half-full bottle.

Blending is conservation, not approximation

The blend mode is exact: total alcohol in equals total alcohol out, so the resulting ABV is a genuine calculation rather than an estimate. The uncertainty in any real batch comes from your input figures — a bottle labelled 40% may not be exactly 40% — not from the maths.

Dilution is not reversible

You can always add water; you cannot take it out. Approach a target from below, especially when batching, and remember that a batch sitting on ice in service keeps diluting after you have stopped measuring.
